Meth addicts to blame for stolen art

Clatsop Oregon’s bronze Sacagawea statue had been missing for a week when they found it dismantled at a nearby scrap metal yard.

At the time the statue went missing, local newspapers were ablaze with headline’s such as this one from The Daily Astorian:
Meth Heads Suspected in Statue Rip-Off“.

There was actually no suspect at the time the newspaper went to print, yet it was easy for the newspaper to assume such a thing. You see, recently towns in the area have been dealing with a rash of thefts by “meth heads” stealing metal and cashing it in at recycling yards in exchange for money to buy dope. In fact, in the not-so-recent past, the same area lost 911 service when a reported meth addict cut the fiber optic lines thinking there would be valuable copper inside. Much to his surprise it was glass and therefore worthless to him. Too bad for everyone else in town that had an emergency - I’m sure they were disheartened by the news that the person that cut the phone lines couldn’t get his fix that night.

The statue thieves were finally caught when they attempted to recycle the bronze at two separate recycling facilities in two days. The operator at the second facility suspected something was odd and called the police when the suspects attempted to sell him the mud covered, dismantled and mangled statue.

I think there are people out there that can relate to scenarios like this. Sketchy plans made in a desperate effort to get high. In this case those plans led to the defacement of a statue worth over $20,000; and for what? Maybe a phat sack that wouldn’t last beyond a day or two. Someone spent months sculpting this statue which now lays a heap of rubble. Is there anything too outlandish when you’re feenin?
